Former MANA Scholarship, Breanna Ruelas, Finding Success!

Picture
Just two years after pitching the Brawley High Union softball team to the CIF-San Diego Division III championship game, Breanna Ruelas recently completed her second season for the University of Redlands Bulldogs.Ruelas, Redlands No. 2 pitcher this season, pitched in the Bulldogs’ final game — a loss in the NCAA Division III playoffs — last month in Minnesota.“I was really nervous because it was my first time pitching in the regionals,” Ruelas said. “It was different from the CIF game, it was more intense. I’m a sophomore and had less experience. ... For Brawley I was a senior and I felt like I knew what to expect.”It also was not sunny like in the CIF championship in San Diego.“It was chilly, about 65 (degrees), and it was raining. … We were playing in a different region because we were a wildcard and had to go there,” Ruelas said.Ruelas moved into the No. 2 pitching position for Redlands this year after starting 35 games as a freshman, playing primarily as an outfielder, hitting .292 with 17 RBIs and 10 runs and seven walks.Defensively, Ruelas tallied 16 putouts and five assists with just one error for a fielding percentage of .955.“They had three pitchers ahead of me so they put me in right field,” Ruelas said. “I wanted to pitch but I was happy I was playing somewhere.”To improve her pitching, Ruelas teamed up with local travel team coach and pitching coach Richard Corpuz in Brawley.“This past summer I worked really hard with Richard and just threw whenever I could and it paid off because I was No. 2 here behind a four-year starter this year,” Ruelas said. “We play doubleheaders and she pitches the first game and in the tournaments she would start and if she needed help I’d come in.”Ruelas also played outfield this season hitting .288 and was named to the first team All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as a utility player.Ruelas, an accounting major, also made the dean’s list this semester. Ruelas is attending Redlands on an academic scholarship.“I got offered full scholarships from a couple of Texas junior colleges but I wanted to stay in Southern California,” Ruelas said. “Redlands offered me an academic scholarship because Division III universities do not give athletic scholarships.”For Ruelas, choosing Redlands has been a great decision.“Academics came first when I chose Redlands. ... I really like the school, it’s small and I’ve made a lot of friends and everyone is playing because they love softball,” Ruelas said. “Our coach is really good about understanding that school comes first and during the fall we don’t practice and I like that so I do have a social life.”
